Beginnings

The beginning of the band can be traced to the encounter between Marko Zigon (drummer and band leader) and Iztok Gustincic (vocals) in the summer of 1997. Marko played electric guitar and invited Iztok to form a band. Iztok bought a bass guitar and the two started rehearsing at Marko's place. In two months' time, they both enrolled at a rock guitar tutorial led by local guitar legend, Stane Bakan.

The first name of the band was Iguano and the aim was to create and perform original material. Bakan invited them to perform as a warm up to one of his gigs on the 4th December of 1997. For the occasion they enlisted Bakan's drummer to perform with them, because they haven't found one yet. Shortly after, Marko Butinar became the band's drummer and performed with them over the following two year period. Highlights of this period were concerts at the »Dan mladosti« (Day of Youth) in May 1998 and the »Day of Culture« in February 1999.

After Butinar's departure, guitarist Marko Skrobar joined, largely due to his enthusiasm to be part of a band. Zigon became the band's new drummer and after a few successful gigs they decided to search for a keyboard player. In July 2001 Gregor Vlacic (keyboards) and Klemen Domjo (guitars) auditioned and the band, now as a five-piece, changed its name to Sons.

Bigger venues

In the summer of 2002, the band achieved its first notable success, they were placed sixth on a Festival for young talents, with the song »Nikoli ni zaman« (Never all in vain). Marko Skrobar left the band in September on amicable terms. Despite the initial search for a replacement member, the band decided to carry on as a four-piece. In December the band was awarded by the listeners and the commission of a local radio station, Radio Val, as the »Musical discovery of the year 2002«.

In between smaller gigs and rehearsals, the band went to Pordenone (Italy) to participate at the »Emergency Rock Festival« for unestablished bands in May 2003, where they achieved the fourth position.

Even more successful was the participation at the »Primorske zvezde« contest, organised by the newspaper Primorske Novice. The band won the contest, according to a readers' poll and a professional commission, formed by Jan Plestenjak, Saso Fajon and Barbara Verdnik. The band was awarded with the opening slot at a big open air concert, headlined by Jan Plestenjak, with 3,500 people attending. They were also given the opportunity to record three songs in a professional studio, which simultaneously began the creation of the first album.

In September 2003, Sons applied to a competition held by RTV Slovenija, to encourage the creativity of new and upcoming artists; two songs were recorded at the Hendrix studio in Koper, one of them ended on the band's debut album.

The next breakthrough came in January 2004, when the band were given the opportunity to play at the media event »O-range Jam« headlined by Tinkara Kovac at the Avditorij in Portoroz. In May 2004 they made their first music video for the single »Ne bom se vdal« (»When I wake«), which was premiered on the final episode of Videospotnice, an important music video show.

In the meantime, the band's debut album was slowly taking shape, while learning how to record in a studio, looking for free studio time in various studios, and gradually changing the arrangements of the songs from rehearsal versions to the final versions.

In May of 2005, after nearly two years in the making, the band's eponymous debut album was released. Two promotional concerts followed, one in Ljubljana (Orto bar) and one in the hometown of Portoroz (Planet Pub). A video for the second single, »Kruh in plosce« (T.E.A.M.) was shot the same month. In the summer, previous single »Ne bom se vdal« was remixed by DJ Lovro and Tomy DeClerque and won the title of »Summer hit« by the local radio station, Radio Capris. With this version earning even more airplay, the band agreed to use the remix option again as an effective promotional tool for future releases.

During the year, the song »Kar se bo« became a »Song of the Week« on Radio Koper and they contested for the »Hit of the Fall« on Radio Capris with the song »Zeleno« (»Green«). Some of the more important appointments of the year included two charity concerts, one in the Avditorij of Portoroz and another on Koper's Tito Square; they also appeared on the Miss Alpe Adria 2005 fashion show. The english version of the debut album was released in December.

2006 started with the appereance of the English version of the single »Ne bom se vdal« on the chart of Italian TV programme RAI Futura. In March the band played on the Mortadeljada festival in Ljubljana, shot a video for third single »Zeleno« and in June participated on the big open air concert of Radio Capris. Even more important was the band's involvement on the MMS Festival, where they were chosen among 111 other artists into the semifinal with the song »Shiora«. The song became the »Hit of the Summer« on radio Capris, and it was given a new lease of life in the remixed version by DJ Dr Silvano, which appeared on a best-selling dance compilation called »Beli album«. In September, the band appeared on a charity concert against suicide and in December on an important television show called »Spet doma« with a Christmas song, »Božično darilo«, performed with singer Zana and a children's choir. They also appeared on a Christmas rock concert in Postojna.

In the meantime, the band recorded a new song, »Pozabljene strasti«, which again became a hit in the remixed version made by Dr Silvano and it was featured on the »Beli album« compilation. The band made another appearance on the 2007 edition of the MMS Festival, where the commission awarded them with the prize for »Best Song« for »Vse kar imam«, a song written especially for the festival; in the overall placing, they were ranked seventh.

The summer saw another involvement on the Miss Alpe Adria fashion event and on the »Pesem poletja«  festival in the Kongo casino of Grosuplje.

Right now, the band are creating their second album, which will be again a labour of love of music.
